How to get legally married in Thailand as a US citizen
February 22, 2022

As a US citizen, if you wish to get legally married in Thailand, you will need to follow the legal procedures set forth by the Thai government. Here are the general steps you will need to take:

Obtain an Affirmation of Freedom to Marry: This is a document issued by the US Embassy in Bangkok that certifies that you are free to marry. You will need to make an appointment with the Embassy and bring your passport, a copy of your birth certificate, and a fee.
Translate and legalize the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry: You will need to have the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry translated into Thai and then legalized by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Obtain a Thai Marriage License: Once you have the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry, you will need to go to a local district office (Amphur) in Thailand to apply for a marriage license. You will need to bring the following documents:
Affirmation of Freedom to Marry (translated and legalized)
Your passport and copies
Two witnesses who are at least 21 years old and have Thai national ID cards
Get married: After you have obtained your marriage license, you can have your wedding ceremony at a location of your choice. You will need to have at least two witnesses present at the ceremony, and they will need to sign the marriage certificate.
Register your marriage: After the ceremony, you will need to register your marriage with the Amphur within 15 days. You will need to bring your marriage certificate, your passport, and a fee.

It's important to note that these are general guidelines, and the specific requirements and procedures may vary depending on your individual circumstances and the district office where you apply for your marriage license. It's always a good idea to check with the US Embassy in Bangkok or a Thai immigration lawyer to ensure that you have all the necessary documents and follow the correct procedures.
